Official Hand Rankings
The hierarchy of poker hands is absolute. For players with no experience, understanding this sequence is the first step toward real gameplay. A Royal Flush remains the unbeatable ceiling of the game.
01. Royal Flush
A, K, Q, J, 10, all of the same suit. The strongest possible hand in any standard poker game.
02. Straight Flush
Five cards in a sequence, all in the same suit (e.g., 9-8-7-6-5 of Hearts).
03. Four of a Kind
All four cards of the same rank (e.g., four Aces).
04. Full House
Three of a kind combined with a pair (e.g., three Kings and two sevens).
05. Flush & Straight
A Flush is 5 cards of the same suit. A Straight is 5 cards in numerical order (A-2-3-4-5 is allowed).
The Kicker Rule
The 'Kicker' often decides the winner when two players have the same pair. It is the highest unmatched card in the five-card hand that breaks the tie. Mastering this nuance is what moves a player from beginner to pro.

How a Hand Progresses
Step-by-step guidance for your first home game.
Every hand begins with forced bets: the Small Blind and the Big Blind. These ensure there is always something to play for, preventing the game from stalling. Each player receives two private cards face down (hole cards).
In Texas Hold'em, the 'Button' is the most powerful position at the table because it allows the player to act last on every betting round after the flop, providing massive strategic advantage.
Three community cards are dealt face-up in the center of the table. Before this, the dealer performs a 'Burn Card'—a physical security measure where the top card is discarded to prevent players from spotting potentially marked cards.
Common Mistake:
Overvaluing Ace-King (Big Slick) before the flop. Remember, it is a drawing hand that must connect to the board to hold true value.
The fourth card (The Turn) and fifth card (The River) are dealt with a round of betting after each. If two or more players remain, the 'Showdown' occurs where players reveal their hands to determine the winner based on the highest five-card combination.
Ethical play is paramount. Table etiquette dictates that you act in turn and avoid 'slow-rolling'—taking unnecessarily long to reveal a winning hand—which is considered the height of poor sportsmanship.

The Unwritten Codes
Responsible Play
Winning is about skill, but playing is about control. Set a strict 'stop-loss' limit before sitting down. Entertainment must always remain within your personal financial bounds.
Pace is Professionalism
Avoid unnecessary delays. Whether folding or betting, keeping the game moving respects the time of others and maintains the competitive energy of the table.
Gracious Outcomes
Winning a pot should be met with quiet dignity; losing a pot should be met with grace. Critique your own strategy after the session, not the dealer's cards at the table.
